ARLINGTON -- The Rangers attempted to fortify their rotation for the final month of the season by acquiring veteran right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the White Sox on Thursday.
The Rangers gave up Minor League infielder Ti'Quan Forbes and designated pitcher Anthony Bass for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Gonzalez.
Gonzalez will likely take Nick Martinez's spot in the rotation. Martinez moved into the rotation when Tyson Ross was sent to the bullpen. The Rangers have been short one starter since Yu Darvish was traded to the Dodgers on July 31. Because Gonzalez was acquired before Sept. 1, he will be eligible for the postseason should the Rangers earn a playoff berth.
"Miguel is an experienced starter to help us down the stretch," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He's been throwing very well the last couple of months and gives us a veteran to bolster our staff in the Wild Card race."
Gonzalez is 7-10 with a 4.31 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 22 starts this season. He is 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in his past five starts. He threw six scoreless innings in a 3-2 victory over the Rangers on Aug. 20. The trade came down after he allowed three runs in six innings against the Twins on Thursday.
Gonzalez is eligible for free agency at the end of this season.
Forbes has combined to hit .234 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs in 130 games between Low-A Hickory and High-A Down East, seeing the majority of his action at third base. He was the Rangers' second-round pick in the 2014 Draft.
