New Rays play important role in sweep of Sox

Aguilar, Sogard each score twice; Anderson gets first Tampa Bay K under his belt

BOSTON -- With the Trade Deadline in the rearview mirror, the Rays are looking forward to seeing what the team can accomplish over the last two months of the season with some of the midseason acquisitions the club made over the last four days.

On Thursday the two new additions to the lineup, and , made a big impact as the Rays won, 9-4, completing a sweep of three games or more against the Red Sox at Fenway Park for only the second time in franchise history.

“Lot of stuff going on yesterday with the Deadline and stuff, but the guys stayed focused, really played good,” said manager Kevin Cash. “We pitched just good enough and kept a good offense fairly quiet when it mattered most. Our offense, nice run they had on this road trip. They really put together some games where the bats came alive, and hopefully that continues.”

With the win, the Rays became the first road team since the 1966 Orioles to win eight games at Fenway Park in a single season. That Baltimore team went on to win the World Series.

“It’s tough to win here, period,” said Cash, who played two seasons with the Red Sox. “It’s tough to win a series here, let alone do what we just accomplished. We should feel good about ourselves. Obviously enjoy our off-day, but we have to get back at it [on Saturday].”

Added Aguilar: “The Red Sox have a great team, too, so that shows that this team is ready to do big things. I think we have to keep going. We have to stay positive, and I think it’s going to be a big year for us.”

Aguilar and Sogard played a pivotal role in the two three-run innings. Aguilar led off the second inning with a walk in his first plate appearance with the Rays, and Sogard moved him over with a single to right field. Aguilar came around to score on a bases-loaded walk to , and Sogard crossed the plate on a wild pitch later that inning to give the Rays a 3-2 lead.

“I just try and see how many pitches I can [see],” Aguilar said. “I kind of don’t know those pitchers, so I tried to see what they have. I’m feeling pretty good at home plate right now, so I think I’m going to be all right.”

In the sixth inning, with the Rays holding on to a 4-3 lead, Aguilar got the rally started again, this time with a one-out single off the Green Monster that had an exit velocity of 105.8 mph. Sogard followed with a long double to right field that went over Mookie Betts’ head. Aguilar scored his second run of the night as grounded into a forceout, and Sogard scored again on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to give the Rays a 6-3 lead.

Choi and also had productive days at the plate. Zunino, who has struggled offensively this season, connected on his sixth home run and reached base four times for the first time in 2019.

“It’s a long season,” Zunino said. “It’s a grind. I have a lot of great teammates, great support around me and it’s one of those things where you keep working through it and to have a game like this, hopefully it’s a building block.”

The run support was enough to help Brendan McKay collect his second big league win after he allowed three runs and struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings.

As for another new Ray, right-hander showed exactly why the Rays were willing to part ways with Ryne Stanek and No. 4 prospect Jesus Sanchez in the deal with the Marlins with a scoreless eighth inning. Anderson allowed a leadoff double to Andrew Benintendi but stranded him at third base, as he was able to strike out Mitch Moreland and Sam Travis to end the inning.

Anderson flashed 96-98 mph with his fastball and used his curveball to strike out Moreland for his first strikeout as a member of the Rays. He recorded five swings-and-misses in just 14 pitches.

“I was telling everybody not to expect that number on the board every time,” Anderson said with a smile. “I kind of surprised myself a little bit. It was awesome to get out there for the Rays and out there with the guys and try to do the best I could do.”

It was a solid first impression all around by the new members of the Rays.

“Our front office looks really smart right now, don’t they?” Cash said. “They worked really hard, and it’s always nice to see those guys come in and have an immediate impact. [Sogard has] been doing it now for a couple days and [Aguilar] came in, pro at-bats, hits the ball really hard, and Nick Anderson had an impressive inning.”
