Rays chow down on popcorn during Game 1

Getting popcorn at the movies is now considered healthy eating

Most things a professional ballplayer eats are probably tremendously boring. Plain chicken breasts, steamed vegetables, maybe a sniff of ice cream every couple of weeks. But the Rays, who already have a different approach to roster building than almost every other team out there, apparently have a different approach to dugout snacks, too: They chow down on popcorn.

Nelson Cruz and Manuel Margot were spotted crunching on the snack normally associated with movies in the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Thursday night, with other members of the roster spotted with the bags in hand, too.

It can only be a matter of time before we see them digging in with some Buncha Crunch or Raisinets, too, right?

"I'm going to be honest," analyst John Smoltz said, "I've never seen baseball players eat popcorn during the game."

Clearly the Rays are enjoying the show, though. Just a few minutes after being spotted with their mid-game snack, Randy Arozarena completed the first straight steal of home in the postseason since 2016. If that's not a popcorn-worthy summer blockbuster spectacle, nothing is.
