Andriese ready for return to rotation in doubleheader

Right-hander will start Game 1 on Saturday vs. Orioles

June 22nd, 2016

CLEVELAND -- Matt Andriese is back in the Rays' starting rotation -- at least for the time being.
The right-hander will start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
After giving up two runs over 1 2/3 innings in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Indians, Andriese is 6-0 with a 2.88 ERA in 10 appearances since being recalled on May 8. The first seven of those outings were starts. He went to the bullpen when the club decided to recall Blake Snell to start last Thursday's game against the Mariners.
Andriese does not think it's going to be any trouble going back to starting after making two relief appearances.
"I don't think so," Andriese said. "I don't think I've been out of the rotation long enough to where I think it will make a huge difference. If I go deep into the game, I might get a little more tired.
"I'm just going to go out there as long as I can, see how I feel. Depends on how the game is going. I'm sure they're not going to leave me out there for 100-plus pitches if they see me wearing down."
Being in the bullpen has changed Andriese's routine, though. The biggest change has been preparing for the possibility of pitching every day.
"It is tough having been in the rotation, then all of a sudden you're going to relief," Andriese said. "I was in a pretty good routine. Lifting twice a week. Different running routines. Now, I've just simplified it."
Specifically, Andriese said he can't have a more prolonged workout the likes of which he could have when he was starting and knew he wouldn't be pitching that night.

"I'd love to work out today knowing that I'm pitching on Saturday," Andriese said, "but I might be up tonight. It's just different. I kind of learned how to deal with it last year. Just being prepared. Do a little bit of something every day instead of a lot."
Andriese doesn't know if he'll remain in the rotation or not, but he is looking forward to returning to a starting role -- even if it is for just one game.
"Just getting out there again," Andriese said. "It's kind of tough not knowing when you're pitching. I get a little more anticipation knowing when I'm starting than when I'm not. I'm looking forward to it, though."
Manager Kevin Cash offered a chuckle when asked if there was a science to how the decision was made to start Andriese in the first game and Jake Odorizzi in the second.
"Yeah, just [went and asked] Jake whatever game he wants," Cash said.
Cash said no decision has been made regarding who will be the club's 26th man for the doubleheader.
"We're not even close [to making that decision]," Cash said.
