BALTIMORE -- Timothy Beckham is nursing a sore left ankle.
The Rays infielder did not start Saturday's game against the Orioles after leaving Friday night's game in favor of pinch-hitter Taylor Featherston in the top of the 10th.
"His ankle's barking a little bit," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "I think he's been playing through a little bit of soreness. Yesterday, really crept in there to where it was probably smart to get him out of the ballgame.
"Hopefully, with some treatment today, he'll be available at some point. And then we'll see about [Sunday]. ... I think it was general soreness, not hurt [entering Friday's game]. And then yesterday, he did bother it, I think, in his third at-bat."
Cash added he thought Beckham's problem was short-term.
"He came in feeling better today," Cash said. "I don't think he's going to hit today, but that doesn't keep him out if we need him later on."
Beckham did not offer comment. He has kept to himself around reporters since the Rays acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria on Monday, which bumped Beckham to second base.
During the conversation about Beckham, Cash praised Featherston, who started at second base Saturday.
"He's done a really nice job in limited playing time," Cash said. "It seems like every time he goes up to the plate he's given a solid at-bat. He's got a knack for finding the barrel."
