On Sunday, September 25, prior to the Tampa Bay Rays-Boston Red Sox 1:10 p.m. game at Tropicana Field, the Rays will honor retiring Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz in a pregame ceremony, which will include parting gifts from Rays players and the Rays organization to be revealed when the festivities begin at 12:55 p.m.
Ortiz is just the fourth visiting player to be honored pregame at Tropicana Field, joining Derek Jeter (September 16, 2014), Mariano Rivera (August 23, 2013) and Cal Ripken Jr. (August 23, 2001).
In his 20-year career with the Twins and Red Sox, Ortiz has played in 118 games at Tropicana Field, second all-time among visiting players to Jeter's 126. He has hit 34 home runs there, matching his uniform number. He is baseball's all-time leader among designated hitters in virtually every offensive category.
