Red Sox announcer sets off iPhone Siri while announcing Jose Siri

June 4th, 2023

Most iPhone users know how to summon Apple's virtual assistant with just two words: "Hey, Siri!"

Unfortunately for Red Sox radio broadcaster Joe Castiglione, he found a new way to wake Siri while calling Saturday's game against the Rays.

"So first and second, still only one out, for Jose Siri," the long-tenured play-by-play commentator for WEEI said.

Apparently, "Jose Siri" -- the name of Tampa Bay's 27-year-old center fielder -- is close enough to "Hey, Siri." Perhaps too close for Castiglione's liking.

Siri sprang to life on the broadcaster's iPhone, causing uproarious laughter from producer Doug Lane in the back of the booth.

"Wait a minute. Did you hear that?" Castiglione's co-commentator asked him.

"I don't know where that came from," Castiglione said.

Upon realizing what had happened, the veteran broadcaster realized there were now two Siris to contend with -- one at the plate and, surprisingly, one in the booth.

"I'm not asking you, Siri," Castiglione said to his phone. "Not this Siri. That Siri."

Whatever the case, it was a Siri-ous moment of levity over the airwaves.
