PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Red Sox right fielder Brennan Boesch fractured his right wrist trying to make a shoestring catch on a sinking line drive in the third inning of a 5-1 split-squad loss to the Rays on Friday at Charlotte Sports Park.
After he was evaluated, it was announced that Boesch -- vying for a roster spot -- will be out indefinitely.
"I'm very disappointed for him," said coach Torey Lovullo, who was managing the split-squad game for Boston. "It's tough to go out there and walk through that moment with him. Obviously, the right wrist fracture is something that none of us want to see.
"In this situation, he should hold his head very high. He tried to make a play to help his team win a game. And we're going to be behind him until he's healthy again."
Boesch got his wrist caught underneath him as he hit the ground trying to make the catch on a ball hit by Steven Souza Jr. He remained on the ground for several minutes while being attended to, and then was led directly to the visitor's clubhouse. He was replaced in right by Joseph Monge.
Boesch drove in Boston's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second.
