Red Sox pick college SS Chatham in Rd. 2

Known best for contact ability, infielder projects to add power to his game

June 9th, 2016

Minutes after selecting C.J. Chatham in the second round of Thursday's Draft, Red Sox director of amateur scouting Mike Rikard made it clear he thinks the shortstop can be more than just the contact hitter some scouting reports have suggested.
"He's a good hitter; he's got a very nice, proven track record with the bat, and we do think he's more than just a contact-type, contact-oriented hitter," said Rikard. "We think there could be some power there."

Chatham -- taken at No. 51 overall -- became the highest Draft selection in the history of Florida Atlantic University.
Though the presence of current star shortstop Xander Bogaerts in Boston suggests that Chatham might eventually move to another spot in the infield, the Red Sox look at him as a true shortstop.
"We like his instincts, we like his makeup, and probably most importantly, we do think he can stay at shortstop and be very good defensively," said Rikard.
The Draft continues on Friday with Rounds 3-10. The MLB.com preview show begins at 12:30 p.m. ET, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 3-10 beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
Chatham wrapped up his college career with a strong junior season, hitting .357 with eight homers, 50 RBIs and a .976 on-base plus slugging percentage.

"We've seen him a lot through the years and had an opportunity to scout him in the Cape Cod League this summer," said Rikard. "Again, we're very proud to say our scout Willy Romay down in South Florida did a really outstanding job kind of getting us on him early and allowing us to see a lot of him throughout the spring."
The Red Sox took first-rounder Jason Groome, a high-ceiling lefty, with the 12th overall pick.
Chatham was overlooked by recruiters after spending most of his career at American Heritage High School (South Florida) as an outfielder. He moved to shortstop in his senior year and gained momentum from there.
The 21-year-old Chatham stands 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds.
