BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia exited Thursday's 6-2 win over the Rangers in the top of the sixth inning with pain in his left knee.
The Red Sox listed his removal from the game as precautionary. Pedroia had surgery on his left knee in the offseason, and had some more trouble with it after Manny Machado's controversial slide at Camden Yards on April 21. Pedroia missed three straight games after the Machado play.
"Pedey wanted to stay in the game," said Farrell. "But with the conditions tonight, we made the decision to take him off the field. Didn't want to do anything, given what he's gone through on that knee. When they dump the tarp, there is a lot of water that stands behind second base, and when they're in an over shift, he's right in the middle of it. While he could have continued, just wanted to be sure. This is more precautionary. And with the conditions, he felt a little soreness. He wanted to stay in the game, but we weren't going to take any chances with it."

It was unclear if a particular moment in the game led to the soreness. Pedroia was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored before leaving the game.
In 42 games this season, Pedroia is hitting .288 with two homers and 21 RBIs.
