Flu lands Red Sox's Ross Jr. on DL

April 6th, 2017

The Red Sox placed left-handed reliever on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with influenza. Infielder was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move.
Ross was unavailable during Wednesday's win over Pittsburgh, and placing him on the DL allows the Red Sox to add depth while allowing Ross to recover fully. He figures to be an integral part of Boston's bullpen again this season after posting a 3.25 ERA over 54 appearances last season. Ross owns a 3.57 ERA in 65 appearances over his two seasons in Boston, and he has yet to appear in a 2017 regular-season game.
Marrero allows Boston another middle-infield option beside backup , who was recalled Thursday, and , who also figures to fill in often in the outfield. Marrero has seen limited action over several Major League stints the past two seasons, hitting .200 in 38 total games.
The move comes on what was a busy day for Boston, transaction-wise. The club also placed and Matt Barnes on the bereavement list and recalled Hernandez and on Thursday, when its finale against the Pirates was postponed due to rain.
