Prior to tonight's game against the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox recalled infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Marrero, 26, is making his second major league stint of the season after being recalled from April 6-11 without appearing in any major league games. He has played 19 games with the PawSox this season, going 12-for-71 (.169) with four runs, three doubles, and four RBI. Since making his big league debut for Boston in 2015, the Miami native has gone 13-for-65 (.200) with eight runs scored and one home run in 38 major league games, appearing defensively at third base (17 games), shortstop (10 games), and second base (nine games). Ranked by Baseball America as the best defensive infielder in the Red Sox organization, Marrero has a .243 batting average (465-for-1,913) with 91 doubles, seven triples, 17 home runs, 169 RBI, and 89 stolen bases in 503 career minor league games.

Workman, 28, pitched three scoreless innings in last night's 8-3 loss to the Orioles, his first major league appearance since 2014. He has not allowed a run in eight innings over four appearances with the PawSox this season, going 1-0 and converting his only save opportunity. The right-hander has held minor league hitters to a .042 batting average in 2017, surrendering only one hit in 24 at-bats with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 June Draft, the 2013 World Series champion has 40 games of regular season major league experience (18 starts), going 7-13 with a 4.99 ERA (73 ER/131.2 IP) and 119 strikeouts. He spent the 2016 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 15, 2015.
