The Boston Red Sox today recalled left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 25-man roster, outfielder Bryce Brentz was optioned to Pawtucket.
 
In addition, right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan today was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Pawtucket, activated from the 15-day disabled list, and outrighted to Boston's Triple-A club.

Elias, who will wear number 51, is 8-1 with a 3.05 ERA (26 ER/76.2 IP) and .223 opponent batting average in 12 minor league appearances (11 starts) since May 18, allowing only one home run in his last six outings (35.1 IP). The 28-year-old has pitched in two major league games over a pair of stints with Boston this season, most recently starting and suffering the loss on June 17 against the Mariners. Acquired by Boston from Seattle this past December, the Cuban native has gone 15-21 with a 4.20 ERA (133 ER/284.2 IP) and 243 strikeouts in 53 games (50 starts) for the Mariners (2014-15) and Red Sox (2016). He has also made 89 appearances (84 starts) at the minor league level, going 35-25 with a 4.06 ERA (223 ER/494.2 IP).
 
Brentz, 27, has hit .279 (17-for-61) with three doubles and a home run in 25 games since being recalled by Boston on June 24, his lone major league stint of the season. He has made 17 starts in left field and one as a designated hitter, with the Red Sox going 9-2 in his last 11 starts. At the minor league level Brentz has split the 2016 season between Double-A Portland (12 games) and Pawtucket (38 games), batting .261 (48-for-184) with 18 runs, 16 doubles, four home runs, and 20 RBI. Selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2010 June Draft, the right-handed hitter has 95 home runs over parts of seven minor league seasons, hitting .262 (576-for-2,196) with 124 doubles, 12 triples, and 373 RBI.
 
O'Sullivan, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 10 (retroactive to July 9) with left knee patellar tendinitis. He has made five appearances (four starts) for the Red Sox in two stints with the club this season, going 2-0 with a 6.75 ERA (16 ER/21.1 IP). Boston has won each of his four starts this season, each of which has come at Fenway Park. Originally selected by the Angels in the third round of the 2005 June Draft, O'Sullivan is 13-23 with a 6.01 ERA (216 ER/323.2 IP) in 71 games (56 starts) over parts of seven major league seasons with the Angels (2009-10), Royals (2010-11), Padres (2013), Phillies (2014-15), and Red Sox (2016).
