The arbitration case between the Red Sox and left-handed reliever Fernando Abad was found in favor of the club on Tuesday morning, with Abad scheduled to earn $2 million in 2017.
Abad, who made $1.25 million last season, filed at $2.7 million. Arbitrators Robert Herzog, Phillip LaPorte and Dennis Archer presided over the hearing.
Abad is the first player the Red Sox have gone to arbitration with since Rolando Arrojo in 2002. Arrojo also was awarded the team's figure.
Abad, who can become a free agent following the 2017 season, had a 6.39 ERA in 18 relief appearances for the Red Sox, striking out 12 in 12 2/3 innings, after he was acquired from the Twins at the non-waiver Trade Deadline.
In 57 outings between Boston and Minnesota, Abad had a 3.66 ERA and one save, with 41 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. He held left-handed hitters to a .153 batting average.
