Reds claim Shaffer, Jenkins off waivers

The Reds announced a pair of waiver claims on Friday, claiming infielder/outfielder from the Phillies and right-hander from the Rangers. In addition, Reds catcher was claimed off waivers by the D-backs.
Shaffer had been claimed off waivers by Philadelphia earlier this month, but the team designated the 25-year-old for assignment on Tuesday. A first-round Draft pick by the Rays in 2012, Shaffer played the past two seasons for Tampa Bay and hit .250/.315/.438 with one home run in 20 games in '16.
Jenkins made his Major League debut for the Braves in 2016, going 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA in 14 appearances, including eight starts. He walked 33 and struck out 26 in 52 innings. He fared better in 17 games (12 starts) at Triple-A, going 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 83 2/3 innings.

The 24-year-old Jenkins had been designated for assignment by the Rangers on Wednesday, two weeks after they acquired him from the Braves along with left-handed pitcher in a trade for right-hander . Jenkins was a first-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2010 Draft.

Graterol had been with the Reds since late November, when Cincinnati claimed him off waivers from the Angels. The 27-year-old made his Major League debut for Los Angeles in 2016 and went 4-for-14 in nine games.
