Mesoraco's hip feeling good in recovery

Reds catcher has had no setbacks since surgery to repair labrum, remove spur

CINCINNATI -- Reds pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training at Goodyear, Ariz., in about three weeks on Feb. 18. Catcher Devin Mesoraco has every expectation that he will be healthy and ready to go from the first day of camp.
Mesoraco has been rehabilitating his left hip since undergoing season-ending surgery June 29 to repair a torn labrum and remove a spur.
"I'm good. I'm anxious to get back out on the field here," Mesoraco said Wednesday. "It's been a long haul with rehabbing and working out. Everything is feeling the way that it should, the way that we planned."
Mesoraco was at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy for the announcement that the RBI World Series would be hosted by the Reds in 2016 and '17.
A left hip impingement, suffered in April, limited Mesoraco to 23 games in 2015, including only nine starts at catcher. Attempts at therapy and trying catching drills and, later, playing left field in the Minor Leagues backfired before he ultimately opted for the surgery.

To this point, there have been no setbacks since the surgery. Mesoraco has been working out at Great American Ball Park since early December.
"I've done everything," Mesoraco said. "I've been hitting for a couple of months. Catching-wise, I've been blocking, throwing, receiving and doing just about everything with no pain."
Mesoraco, 27, felt like his next big test would be catching in exhibition games. Lately, he's been reviewing video with catching coordinator Mike Stefanski to make adjustments and prevent a recurrence of the injury.
"Mechanically, there are some things that we would like to sharpen up or change," Mesoraco said. "But you can't really tell if it's going to take until you start playing in games. Once we get down there, we'll continue to work."
