PHILADELPHIA -- Claimed off waivers by the Reds from the Cubs on Thursday, right-handed pitcher Jake Buchanan walked into the visiting clubhouse on Friday at Citizens Bank Park and saw familiar faces in pitchers Scott Feldman and Asher Wojciechowski.
All three were once with the Astros.
"I texted [Wojciechowski] the other day when he got called up, 'Hey man, congrats. I saw you're back in the show.' A week later, I'm here with him," said Buchanan, who was in the Astros organization from 2010-15. "It's pretty crazy how it all works. Feldman, I played with him a bit too."
Buchanan and Wojciechowski were the top contenders, along with Robert Stephenson, to get a spot start in the next series at Toronto. The Reds need a starter to fill injured lefty Amir Garrett's spot on Tuesday, and manager Bryan Price announced after a 5-2 win over the Phillies on Friday night that they'll go with Wojciechowski after he worked one-third of an inning in the ninth, yielding two runs (one earned) on two hits. Lisalverto Bonilla will be the starter on Monday.
Buchanan last pitched a week ago Friday for Triple-A Iowa, while Wojciechowski worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief vs. the Rockies on Saturday in his Reds debut. All three pitchers were available from the bullpen in the interim.

"We had to make a decision on if we're going to start Wojo or Buchanan here that second day in Toronto," Price said. "If [Wojciechowski] didn't get in there in a 5-0 game to get some work, he goes close to 10 days without pitching in a game before we take him up to Toronto and give him a start."
This season at Iowa, Buchanan was 2-2 with a 4.75 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in eight starts. The 27-year-old has a 3.75 ERA in 24 games, including 3 starts, over parts of three seasons in the Majors with the Astros and Cubs. He last pitched in the big leagues for Chicago on Sept. 30, 2016, and he defeated the Reds with five scoreless innings.
Buchanan was pleased with how he landed with Cincinnati, going from the Minors to a big league job via a waiver claim.
"It's something I guess you don't see too much," he said. "It's definitely a good opportunity. I'll try to make the most of it, come in and get off to a good start."
Worth noting
• Injured starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (sprained UCL in elbow) has been doing light throwing for a few days without issue. But the road ahead remains long toward his comeback.
"I haven't been told anything. I'm sure I will know more as I get closer. It's so minimal right now," DeSclafani said Friday of his throwing program and intensity.
Price still has a plan loosely defined, but he wasn't ready to get too specific. DeSclafani hasn't pitched since the early days of Spring Training.
"I don't think it provides him the opportunity to come back before the All-Star break," Price said. "I just think there is too much throwing before he even gets on a mound to face hitters for the first time. It really is going back to square one, from a throwing standpoint."
• Backup catcher Stuart Turner, on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, ran the bases and did other drills to test his legs Friday. The club will soon determine a plan to send Turner on a Minor League rehab assignment.
