Reds reinstate 5 from 60-day IL, add pitching prospect to roster in flurry of moves

CINCINNATI – With some additions, a couple of subtractions and several being procedural, the Reds made a bevy of roster moves on Thursday.

All of the Reds’ players who were on the 60-day injured list – right-handed pitcher Julian Aguiar, infielder Tyler Callihan, righty Rhett Lowder, righty Carson Spiers and lefty Brandon Williamson – were reinstated to the 40-man roster.

Right-handed starting pitcher Jose Franco had his contract selected from Triple-A Louisville. Righty reliever Roddery Muñoz was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals.

Left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartin was claimed off waivers by the Giants, and righty Sam Benschoter was sent outright to Louisville.

The moves put Cincinnati's 40-man roster at 37 players.

Franco, 24, was 10-4 with a 3.11 ERA over 31 games, including 26 starts, between Double-A Chattanooga and Louisville. The club’s No. 25 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Franco led the Reds' farm system in wins while being tied for first in starts and second with 118 strikeouts.

Muñoz, 25, had an 8.18 ERA in nine big league appearances and 11 innings for St. Louis. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Memphis, where he had a 3.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings over 38 relief appearances. In 2024, he pitched in 18 games (17 starts) for the Marlins and had a 6.53 ERA.
