Reynaldo Lopez, a key prospect the White Sox acquired in the trade that sent outfielder Adam Eaton to the Nationals, shined for Chicago in a 3-2 loss to the Giants at Camelback Ranch on Monday.
Lopez (White Sox No. 4 prospect, No. 46 overall) allowed just two hits while striking out four, outpitching Giants All-Star right-hander Johnny Cueto. Cueto went five innings, giving up a run on one hit, striking out three.
Lopez lowered his ERA this spring to 3.72. The 23-year-old made his Major League debut with the Nationals last season, and posted a 4.91 ERA in 44 innings (11 games, six starts). In 19 starts between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse, Lopez posted a 3.21 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, striking out 126 in 109 1/3 innings.
Other notable performances from top prospects on Monday
• Gleyber Torres (Yankees' No. 1 prospect, No. 3 overall) hit a two-run double off Nationals left-hander Neal Cotts in a 9-3 Yankees win at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
The 20-year-old shortstop, acquired in the deal that sent Albertin Chapman to the Cubs last summer, is batting a scorching .464 in 28 at-bats this spring, with two home runs and nine RBIs.
• Bradley Zimmer (Indians' No. 1, No. 22 overall) belted his third homer of the spring, an eighth-inning solo shot in a 14-5 win over the Dodgers at Goodyear Ballpark.
Zimmer, Cleveland's first-round pick in the 2014 Draft, is batting .354 in 48 Cactus League at-bats.
The 24-year-old outfielder hit 14 home runs in 93 games for Double-A Akron last year, but just one homer in 37 games (128 at-bats) for Triple-A Columbus. Overall, Zimmer hit .250/365/.425 between the two levels in 2016.
• Willie Calhoun (Dodgers No. 4 prospect, No. 82 overall) made the most of his only at-bat as the second baseman hit his first Spring Training homer in the top of the ninth inning in a 14-5 loss to the Indians. Calhoun is hitting .333/.360/.542 through 24 at-bats this spring.
• Ryder Jones (Giants' No. 30) hit a three-run homer to right-center field with two outs in the eighth inning to lift San Francisco to a 3-2 win over the White Sox. The 22-year-old third baseman is 5-for-13 (.385) this spring.
The Giants' second-round pick in 2013, Jones hit .247/.291/.397 with 15 home runs in 126 games for Double-A Richmond. He shined in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .302/.380/.429 with two doubles and two homers in 63 at-bats.
• Yandy Diaz (Indians' No. 10) helped his stock in the competition for Cleveland's starting third base job, going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in a 14-5 win over the Dodgers at Goodyear Ballpark.
Diaz's homer came in the fifth inning against Dodgers reliever Adam Liberatore.
The 25-year-old outfielder from Cuba has been sizzling at the plate this spring, hitting .417 in 24 at-bats. In 121 games between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus last season, Diaz hit .318/.408/.446 in 444 at-bats.
• Brian Anderson (Marlins' No. 3) went 2-for-3 with a three-run triple in the fourth inning of a 9-3 win over the Braves. The 23-year-old infielder is batting .389 in 36 Grapefruit League at-bats.
In 135 games between Class A Advanced Jupiter and Double-A Jacksonville last season, Anderson hit .265/.348/.389 with 11 home runs.
• Mets No. 30 prospectT.J. Rivera didn't waste any time showing off his power in the World Baseball Classic semifinals for Team Puerto Rico. Rivera swatted a solo homer in his first at-bat to give his squad a 3-2 lead against the Netherlands in a game that Puerto Rico eventually won 4-3 in 11 innings.
• Jose Osuna (Pirates' No. 29) hit his team-leading fifth Grapefruit League home run in a 5-4 win over the Rays. Osuna is batting a blistering .417/.500/.889 in 36 Spring Training at-bats, making a strong case to make Pittsburgh's Opening Day roster.
The 24-year-old first baseman and outfielder has struggled defensively, but is forcing the issue with his performance at the plate.
"He's been a developing player. He's mature in the box. He has a slow heartbeat. He's going to defend the way he defends," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Outfield, the range is the range. It is what it is. What he gets to, he's going to handle. The [batter's] box, though, is where I believe he's going to be an impactful player."
In 133 games between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis in 2016, Osuna hit .279/.331/.457 with 37 doubles and 13 home runs.
• Ryan O'Hearn (Royals' No. 8) had a big day at the plate in Kansas City's 10-6 loss to the Reds, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
O'Hearn's homer was his second of the spring, coming in the sixth inning off Cincinnati right-hander Tim Adleman.
In 134 games between Class A Advanced Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas in 2016, O'Hearn hit .275/.351/.478 with 22 home runs.
