The Cardinals are keeping one of their rising young executives around with a promotion.
St. Louis named 34-year-old Rob Cerfolio as its new general manager on Friday.
Cerfolio, who had been an assistant GM with the Cardinals since 2024, will still work under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom. The move comes after longtime Cardinals executive Randy Flores became the Astros’ general manager this past week.
“Since joining the Cardinals two years ago, Cerf has spearheaded tremendous progress in our player development efforts from top to bottom, and in the advancement of our performance group and its integration within our entire organization,” said Bloom in a statement. “He is relentless in his desire to move us forward, and is invested in relationships with both new hires and longtime staff alike. I’m excited to partner with him in his new role as we work to set the standard for the industry in every area of baseball operations.”
Cerfolio previously worked in the Guardians' front office from 2015-24, rising to director of player development. Reports labeled Cerfolio as a person of interest for several open front-office roles this offseason, including the Athletics’ lead executive job that went to Taylor Smith.
A Yale graduate, Cerfolio played a key role in overseeing the Cardinals’ youth movement in 2026, which saw major breakouts from Jordan Walker and JJ Wetherholt, as well as debuts from Joshua Báez and Leo Bernal. The St. Louis system remains strong heading into 2027 and beyond, headlined by catcher Rainiel Rodriguez, who ranks as MLB Pipeline’s No. 10 overall prospect.
