Cano ramps up activity, nearing IL return

Lugo activated from IL; Kemp plays first Triple-A game for Mets

June 1st, 2019

PHOENIX -- Mets second baseman is eligible to come off the injured list on Sunday. Manager Mickey Callaway hasn’t committed to that happening, but it remains a possibility.

Cano had a “great day” on Friday, per Callaway, as the veteran second baseman took batting practice, fielded ground balls and ran ahead of the Mets’ series opener against the D-backs at Chase Field. Cano went on the IL with a left quad strain on May 23.

“He’s progressing nicely at this point,” Callaway said. “I think we still have to see how he recovers every day, but I think the near future is possible.”

Cano traveled with the team to Los Angeles, where he participated in running drills on the field with the training staff, then stayed with the club for this weekend’s series in Phoenix.

In his first season with the Mets, Cano is batting .241/.287/.371 with three home runs, 13 doubles and 13 RBIs in 45 games. The 36-year-old was in a 2-for-18 skid when he strained his quad while running to first base on a groundout against the Nationals on May 22.

Lugo activated, ready for action
The back end of the Mets’ bullpen has carried a heavy workload this week, but help arrived Friday, when right-hander was activated from the injured list. The 29-year-old had been on the IL with right shoulder tendinitis since May 20.

Lugo threw a 26-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday, but he did not go on a rehab assignment prior to his activation, so he hadn’t pitched in a game since May 19. However, Callaway believed the righty was immediately ready to pitch in high-leverage situations.

“We’re confident he’s going to go out there and get big outs for us right away, especially with as much stress as our other main relievers have been having lately because they’ve been pitching a lot of games,” Callaway said. “We’re not going to be afraid to put him in any situation.”

Entering Friday, closer Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia had each pitched seven times since May 20, while Robert Gsellman made six appearances in that span.

Prior to his injury, Lugo went 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 26 innings over 19 appearances.

Left-hander Daniel Zamora, who posted a 6.00 ERA over 11 appearances, was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to open a spot on the 25-man roster for Lugo. With Zamora optioned and Justin Wilson (left elbow soreness) still on the injured list, Hector Santiago is the only left-hander in New York’s bullpen.

Kemp makes Syracuse debut
Veteran outfielder , who signed a Minor League deal with the Mets last Friday, played his first game for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday night. He started at designated hitter and batted cleanup at Pawtucket, going 1-for-6 with a single.

Kemp was an All-Star with the Dodgers last season, but he batted .200/.210/.283 with one homer and five RBIs in 20 games for the Reds this year before getting released on May 4. He was on the injured list with a broken left rib at the time of his release.

Kemp provides outfield depth for the Mets, who will wait for the veteran to get into playing shape before deciding whether to call him up to the big league roster at some point this season.
