3 Rox prospects on non-roster invite list

February 16th, 2021

DENVER -- Three of the club's Top 30 MLB Pipeline prospects and competitors for the first-base and pitching jobs highlight the Rockies’ list of 22 non-roster invitees to Major League Spring Training, which was announced on Tuesday.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled for their initial workout on Thursday, and the first full-squad workout is set for next Tuesday.

Left-handed pitcher Ryan Rolison (Rockies' No. 2), third baseman-outfielder Ryan Vilade (No. 4) and outfielder Jameson Hannah (No. 16) headline a streamlined list of prospects invited to Scottsdale, Ariz.

Rolison, 23, a Rockies first-round pick in 2018, and Vilade, a second-rounder in 2017, spent last summer at the Rockies’ alternate training site. The club resisted bringing Rolison to the Majors at the end of last season, instead giving him innings at instructional league to prepare him for camp this year.

The Rockies believe Vilade, 21, has shown power-hitting tools during his adjustment to pro ball after being drafted out of Stillwater (Okla.) High School. In the final 33 games at Class A Advanced Lancaster in 2019, Vilade batted .348 with a .955 OPS and seven home runs. The club has converted Vilade to the outfield over the past year and a half, but third base (his previous position) and first base are a part of his positional mix.

Hannah, 23, acquired in November from the Reds with Major League reliever Robert Stephenson in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman, was a second-round pick of the Athletics in 2018. Hannah, originally sent to the Reds for pitcher Tanner Roark, brings above-average speed and defense, plus a gap-to-gap offensive approach.

Most of the other top prospects will return when Minor League camp begins later in the spring, with COVID-19 restrictions making for a smaller camp.

Here are some competitions where non-roster players could force themselves onto the Major League roster, now or during the season:

Starting pitchers: Chi Chi González has spent parts of the past two seasons with the Rockies for 20 games, including 16 starts, and Dereck Rodríguez appeared in 51 games, including 35 starts for the Giants from 2018-20. Also, how close is Rolison to the Majors?

First base: Right-handed-hitting C.J. Cron and left-handed-hitting Greg Bird bring considerable Major League experience. The Rockies are intrigued by right-handed-hitting Connor Joe, a one-time top Pirates pick who appeared in eight games with the Giants in 2019. Joe was at Dodgers Spring Training last year, when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent surgery.

Bullpen: Righties Joe Harvey, whose chance last year was derailed by a forearm strain, and Jesus Tinoco saw time with the Rockies over the past two seasons. Righty Chad Smith, acquired last summer from the Marlins when the Rockies swapped Tinoco and later brought him back, and lefty Brian Gonzalez, formerly with the Orioles, will get a fresh look.

A wild card is righty Julian Fernández, who was returned to the Rockies after a 2018 Rule 5 Draft spin with the Giants and had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Scouts from other teams coveted him in trade talks the first time he was with the organization when he was lighting up the radar gun at 103 mph. Now healthy, Fernández has regained his 95-plus mph velocity.

Utility: Chris Owings, a shortstop of some renown a few years back, was in Rockies camp on a Minor League deal last year and won a job. Owings was re-signed, and he could be in line for playing time if the hitting stroke of prospect Brendan Rodgers doesn’t arrive.

Catcher: José Briceño, a Rockies farmhand early in his pro career, saw Major League time with the Angels in 2018 and '20.

The club also announced that 13 players will participate alongside the Major Leaguers at Triple-A camp: catcher Austin Bernard, outfielders Wynton Bernard, Casey Golden and Nick Longhi; infielders Scott Burcham, José Gomez and Taylor Snyder; right-handed pitchers Ryan Feltner, Brandon Gold and Garrett Schilling; and left-handed pitchers Ian Clarkin, Zac Rosscup and Jack Wynkoop.
