Diehl, Harvey called up to bolster bullpen

September 7th, 2019

SAN DIEGO -- The Rockies added two relievers Friday, recalling left-hander Phillip Diehl and right-hander from Triple-A Albuquerque. Those callups increased the Rockies’ roster to 34 active players, 18 of them pitchers.

Harvey, 27, broke into the big leagues with the Yankees earlier this season and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in nine games. The Rockies acquired him July 31 for Minor League lefty Alfredo Garcia. Harvey had a 10.38 ERA in nine games with Albuquerque after the trade.

Diehl, 25, made his Major League debut with the Rockies in June and pitched against the Cubs in back-to-back games June 11-12. He allowed four runs in two total innings before returning to Albuquerque. He held left-handed hitters to a .214 batting average in Triple-A and did not allow a hit against a lefty at Double-A early in the season, suggesting Diehl will be targeted for lefty-lefty matchups in the season’s final three weeks.

Manager Bud Black has four left-handed relievers to choose from on the expanded roster -- Diehl, Jake McGee, James Pazos and Sam Howard.

“Diehl’s in that mix,” Black said.

Worth noting

Outfielder , who was designated for assignment on Tuesday, has been assigned outright to Triple-A after clearing waivers. He played in one game with the Rockies this season after making 75 big league appearances in 2018.

When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster and 25-man roster, if he was on that. Within seven days of the transaction, the player must either be released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.

Injury updates

Though time might be running short on injured starting pitchers (right arm inflammation) and (left groin strain) to have the foundation to return for extended innings this month, Black said both are continuing to progress. Black rated Freeland as closer than Marquez, but neither has a target date at this point.
