Injuries & Moves: Jones (back) to IL; Beck called up for debut

April 30th, 2024

LATEST NEWS

April 30: OF (low back strain) placed on 10-day IL, retroactive to April 29; OF recalled from Triple-A; LHP (Tommy John surgery) transferred to 60-day IL
Jones had been struggling with low back issues over the past week, after exiting early on April 23 against the Padres, then again on Sunday vs. the Astros. Per manager Bud Black, the Rockies don't expect Jones' IL stint to last more than 10 days, though that will depend on how quickly Jones bounces back.

Gilbreath, who is dealing with a setback in his return from Tommy John surgery, was transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a spot for Beck -- Colorado's No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and No. 73 overall -- on the 40-man roster.

Beck was recalled to slot into the outfield in place of Jones. Beck, who got off to a hot start at Triple-A Albuquerque -- hitting .307 with five home runs and more RBIs (28) than games played (25) -- has both power and speed that could help energize the Rockies. Beck made his debut on Tuesday for the series opener against Miami, hitting eighth and starting in left field.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

OF (low back strain)
Expected return: Mid-May
Jones had been dealing with lower back issues leading up to his placement on the IL, retroactive to April 29. He initially left the April 23 game vs. the Padres early, but returned to start the April 27 Mexico Series opener. He then exited the finale on April 28 early, though.

Manager Bud Black is not concerned about Jones' IL stint being longer than 10 days, though only time will tell. (Last updated: April 30)

1B (low back strain)
Expected return: TBD
Manager Bud Black said Bryant is hoping to soon resume baseball activities, but there is no timetable. As of April 30, Bryant had ramped up his activity level and is getting closer to swinging, but he is not yet cleared to start baseball activity.

Bryant, hitting .149 with one homer through 13 games this year, has missed considerable time since signing a seven-year contract before the 2022 season. (Last updated: April 30)

LHP Kyle Freeland (left elbow strain)
Expected return: Possibly late May
Manager Bud Black said Freeland's arm is responding to treatments, and the southpaw will likely start throwing sometime during the first week of May. Freeland said his injury occurred during his April 14 start in Toronto. (Last updated: April 30)

60-day IL

LHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: TBD
Gilbreath felt discomfort in his left shoulder while throwing 18 pitches (nine strikes) in his first rehab game for Triple-A Albuquerque on April 23, the first game he's pitched in since Aug. 26, 2022. Manager Bud Black said Gilbreath is still in Denver under the care of the Rockies' rehab staff.

Black noted that there are no problems with the elbow, on which Tommy John surgery was performed in March 2023. The plan is to let the shoulder pain and inflammation subside. Originally, the Rockies hoped Gilbreath would return before the end of April, but that's not possible. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 30. (Last updated: April 30)

RHP Daniel Bard (right forearm)
Expected return: 2025
Bard, who tore the meniscus in his left knee while playing catch prior to Spring Training and underwent surgery, had a setback rehabbing and will undergo season-ending surgery on his right arm on May 1. The Rockies placed him on the 60-day IL to add LHP Ty Blach to the active roster.

Bard, 38, is in the final year of a two-year, $19 million contract. Bard has said he would like to return after a year of rehab, but he will see how he feels and consult his family before committing to pitching again. Read more>> (Last updated: April 21)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Around midseason
Manager Bud Black said Márquez's rehab is going as planned. He has remained on schedule with facing hitters at extended spring training, and there have been no setbacks. (Last updated: April 20)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: TBD
Senzatela was placed on the 60-day IL on Feb. 28, and his status for the season is unclear following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last July. (Last updated: Feb. 28)
