DENVER -- Right-handed pitcher Case Williams officially is looking to become the next Colorado pitcher to call Coors Field home.

The Rockies and Williams, the club's fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft (110th overall), agreed to terms on Wednesday in Denver. Now Williams, Now Williams, out of Douglas County High School in Colorado, will attempt to follow some big footsteps. Lefty Kyle Freeland, who prepped at Denver’s Thomas Jefferson High before pitching at the University of Evansville, is a key member of the Rockies’ current staff.

The club announced the signing but did not disclose terms.

Williams, who had committed to the University of Santa Clara, has touched 96 mph with his fastball and has a workable curve. He went 14-2 with a 2.98 ERA including 8-1 with a 1.81 ERA and 79 strikeouts during a 2019 season that included a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. And, of course, he has experience in Colorado’s unique atmosphere, which can be hard on pitchers.

“I think it could be a reason,” Freeland said. “I don’t think it’s the sole reason but it obviously helps being experienced in the altitude, and non-altitude as well. I think that helped the decision.”

Williams, listed at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, top-rated high school right-handed pitcher in the state according to Colorado Prep Report. He joins Pine Creek’s Ryan Warner (third round, 2012) and Greeley Central’s Shawn Chacon (third round, 1996) as in-state pitchers that the Rockies have taken in the first four rounds out of high school. Freeland was a first-rounder, but that was after his collegiate career.

Williams’ draft position is the highest for a Colorado high schooler since the Rays took lefty pitcher Brock Burke of Evergreen High in the third round in 2014.
