SAN DIEGO -- Tyler Chatwood came through for the Rockies on both sides of the ball Friday night, leading Colorado to a 4-1 win over the Padres after tallying a pair of hits and allowing one run over 6 2/3 innings on the mound. With the victory, Colorado matched its 68-game win total from last season.
Chatwood singled in the third before scoring on Charlie Blackmon's two-run homer one batter later, and ended the night of San Diego starter Luis Perdomo when he hit a two-RBI triple -- the first of his career -- with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Perdomo eclipsed the 100-pitch mark for the sixth time this season, and held the Rockies to just a pair of runs through six innings before Chatwood's triple in the seventh ended his night. The Rule 5 pick induced nine ground-ball outs.
"He was solid. Obviously Chatwood hurt him twice," said Padres manager Andy Green. "Outside of him, I think most of the day was really, really good… One swing kind of changes the whole context."

It was a battle of sinkers, as Chatwood used a heavy sinker to get eight ground ball outs against just three in the air. Chatwood's night improved his road ERA to 1.77, which would lead the Majors if he had three more innings to qualify.
"I think I threw way more fastballs tonight than I normally do, and I usually throw a lot of fastballs," Chatwood said. "I just felt good with it, I felt like it had depth and I could locate it."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Two-way player: Chatwood, who hit .521 his senior year at Redlands East Valley High School in California before being drafted by the Angels as a pitcher, knocked the third extra-base hit of his career in the seventh inning to score two. The triple was nearly reeled in on a diving effort by Travis Jankowski, but it just beat the center fielder's glove and reached the wall.
"He'll give you a good at-bat," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Had to make a decision there, we're up 2-1 and his spot comes up with two guys on. I felt he was throwing the ball well, we had the lead, so I let him take that at-bat and he drives in two, so that was a big at-bat." More >>

A bit too bold: The Padres have made aggressiveness on the bases a theme this season, and that was certainly the case in the bottom of the sixth. After becoming the first leadoff hitter to reach base, Jon Jay rounded second on a hit-and-run, trying to go from first-to-third on a Wil Myers groundout to shortstop. The play backfired, and a potential scoring opportunity turned sour once Jay was thrown out at third as part of a 6-3-5 double play.
"It's an aggressive mistake," Green said. "I think he'd look at it and say the same thing. He's trying to make something happen. We had a fairly lackluster offensive day and he was trying to be aggressive. We tried to put something on with the hit-and-run to kind of get Wil going a little bit, and put Jon in motion. Kind of backfired on us, but it's the aggressive play. Obviously, we'd rather Jon stay at second base there, but he thought he had it in the moment."

Blackmon's bomb: Blackmon gave the Rockies the lead in the third inning after Alex Dickerson's homer, hitting a mistake pitch from Perdomo down the right-field line for a two-run homer. It was Blackmon's 24th long ball of the year.
"[Perdomo]'s got a lot of movement and that one just happened to leak back over," Blackmon said. "He made a couple good pitches in, which I wasn't really expecting. He got to two strikes, then he actually tried to throw a fastball away and missed back over the plate."
Sardinas with the stick:Luis Sardiñas has been surprisingly effective with the bat since joining the Padres in late August, hitting .286 (14-for-49) with eight walks after going 2-for-3 with a single and double off the center field wall Friday night. Prior to his stint with San Diego, the 23-year-old managed just a .181/.203/.264 triple slash in 32 games with Seattle.
"[I] feel good about his offensive performance," Green said. "A pretty good eye by the organization to pick him up and give him a shot." More >>

Rockies:Jon Gray has averaged 10 strikeouts in three starts against the Padres this year and will look to add to that on Saturday at 6:40 p.m. MT. He gave up five earned runs in his last start against the D-backs.
Padres:Christian Friedrich continues to take his turn the Padres rotation Saturday, as he builds on his 104 2/3 innings -- the most he's thrown in his career. This marks the second time this season Friedrich has thrown against his former team, after limiting the Rockies to one earned run over six innings in Coors Field back in June. First pitch is at 5:40 p.m. PT.
