ATLANTA -- The last time Phillies fans heard from Roy Halladay, he had agreed in March to join the organization as a guest instructor.
He has continued to work in that role, dropping in to Spectrum Field and Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Fla., on occasion. While Halladay certainly has plenty to offer on the mechanical side of pitching, his interest and forte is in mental preparation.
"That was always his strong point," Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.
Halladay is taking classes in pursuit of a degree in psychology at the University of South Florida.
"This was something that he had some interest in, and we're giving him the opportunity to interact with players," Proefrock said. "He was there as a guest instructor during Spring Training, developed some relationships with players and decided he wanted to continue this."
It remains to be seen if Halladay could transition into a full-time role in the future. He also coaches both of his sons' baseball teams.
