KANSAS CITY -- Manager Ned Yost knows what the Royals' record is, but he doesn't pay much attention, if at all, to the standings. That comes far later in the season.
"I probably look at the standings at the beginning of every homestand because I start scouring up-to-date stats of other teams," Yost said. "But it's more about what's going on in the National League and stuff.
"It's meaningless in that you don't worry about it. It's not like you look one day in May and go, 'Hey, we're three games under and we should be five games over.' You don't worry about it. You just go out and play.
"We don't go about our business any different based on standings, especially now."
And Yost's attitude applies to players' statistics as well.
"I very rarely look at stats," Yost said. "To me it's just about one thing: Are you helping us win?
"Besides that, stats right now are totally meaningless. I mean, you get a hit and your average goes up 20 points. It doesn't change how I think about someone."
Collins has surgery
Left-hander Tim Collins underwent his second Tommy John surgery last week in Los Angeles. The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Collins' first surgery, in which the graft didn't hold in his elbow, had been performed by Dr. James Andrews in March 2015.
Because this was Collins' second surgery, his recovery time will be slightly longer -- he won't start throwing again for six months. Collins will be a free agent after this season.
