Ventura appealing 9-game suspension for fracas

June 9th, 2016

CHICAGO -- Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura appealed a nine-game suspension for his involvement in the altercation during Tuesday night's Royals-Orioles game, Major League Baseball announced on Thursday.
Ventura received the suspension and an undisclosed fine for "intentionally throwing at [Manny] Machado and fighting."
Machado, who charged the mound after being hit by a Ventura fastball, received a four-game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount. He also has appealed.

Because of the appeals, both suspensions will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is complete.
Ventura contended that his pitching strategy on Tuesday night was to pitch fastballs inside and breaking balls in the dirt. He threw two inside pitches to Machado in the second inning moments before Machado flied out to left field. Machado exchanged words with Ventura as he rounded first on the flyout and had to be sent to the dugout by the first-base umpire.

When Machado came up again in the fifth, Ventura's first pitch, a 99-mph fastball, hit Machado in the back, and Machado subsequently charged the mound. Both players swung wildly, both benches and bullpens emptied and both players were ejected.
It was the third ejection for Ventura in his career. He received a seven-game suspension last April for an incident with Adam Eaton of the White Sox that also triggered a benches-clearing fracas. Ventura first appealed that suspension, then dropped it.
Royals officials had no comment about the league's action on Thursday.
But Royals general manager Dayton Moore told MLB.com on Wednesday, "The Commissioner's Office does a tremendous job of handling these situations fairly with proper punishment. And whatever is decided in this case, we will accept."
Moore also said, "I just know from what I saw that there is enough blame to go around. It's an unfortunate part of the game. But it's essential to be able to command your fastball on both sides of the plate."
