Lewis, Balazovic to rep Twins at Futures Game

June 30th, 2019

CHICAGO -- With the Twins off to one of the best starts in franchise history, Friday served as a reminder that the future also remains bright for the organization. Shortstop Royce Lewis and right-handed pitcher Jordan Balazovic were named to the American League roster for the 2019 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Cleveland, which will be played at 6 p.m. CT next Sunday, July 7, at Progressive Field.

Lewis, who was selected with the first overall selection of the 2017 MLB Draft, is the No. 7 prospect in MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list, while Balazovic, who is No. 100, recently climbed onto the list as part of his sustained success with both Class A Cedar Rapids and Class A Advanced Fort Myers this season. This will mark the first Futures Game selection for both Lewis and Balazovic.

The Twins are one of four AL Central clubs that will have multiple representatives at the Futures Game, with the Indians and White Sox also sending two apiece, and three Tigers prospects slated to participate.

Coming off a solid year that included a run to the Florida State League championship following a midseason promotion to Fort Myers, Lewis has gotten off to a relatively slow start with the Miracle this season, slashing .232/.280/.354, with six homers, 13 doubles, three triples and 13 stolen bases in 72 games.

That said, Lewis is still only 20 years old and has his youth, well-rounded skillset and maturity on his side. He had earned his first invitation to Major League Spring Training this season, though he was sidelined with an oblique strain for much of camp.

Balazovic, 20, has rocketed up the prospect rankings over the course of the season, rising from the Twins' No. 29 prospect in last year's MLB Pipeline rankings to No. 5 on the 2019 list before he snuck into the overall Top 100 for the first time last Friday.

The 6-foot-4 Ontario, Canada, native was a fifth-round selection in the 2016 MLB Draft and spent two years at the Rookie level before posting solid numbers in Class A last season and breaking out across two levels this year. He burst onto the scene in Fort Myers following his promotion by striking out 10 batters in seven no-hit frames before punching out 12 in his next appearance.

Balazovic has a 2.74 ERA across 13 starts in Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers this season, with 91 strikeouts and 19 walks in 65 2/3 innings.

The coaching staff for the AL squad also boasts two Twins connections, as Hall of Famer Jim Thome will manage Lewis and Balazovic, while longtime Twins infielder Nick Punto will serve as the team's first-base coach.

For the first time, the Futures Game will be an American League vs. National League format, as opposed to the USA vs. World setup of previous years. The game will be televised on MLB Network and live-streamed on MLB.com, and it will also be available on SiriusXM.

Kepler sits after leaving game with right knee bruise

wasn't in Sunday's starting lineup after leaving Saturday's game with a bruised right knee that he aggravated on his fourth-inning sliding catch of a line drive from White Sox designated hitter Zack Collins. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said that Kepler would be available to play Sunday if needed, potentially as a defensive replacement.

"It's a good day to get him off his feet," Baldelli said. "If we could get him off his feet for even half of a game, I think it would be helpful to him, and I think the off-day [on Monday] will be helpful to him, too."

On the mend

passed the 60-day mark on the injured list on Sunday, meaning he could be eligible for reinstatement off the IL whenever the Twins might need him. The left-hander has been sidelined since May 1 with a right calf strain.

Mejia began a rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Fort Myers on June 10 and was moved to Double-A Pensacola on June 20. He has posted five scoreless appearances during the rehab assignment, with nine strikeouts, one walk and four hits allowed in six innings.
