Second baseman Ryan Schimpf flirted with Padres history on Friday night at Citi Field in New York.
In his first two at-bats, the rookie hit a grand slam in the first, followed by a two-run homer in the third -- giving him six RBIs in two at-bats.

The Padres' all-time record for RBIs in a game is eight. Only nine Padres have ever had more than six RBIs in a game.
Alas, Schimpf finished with the two homers and six RBIs. After Mets starter Logan Verrett gave up eight runs -- all coming on four homers -- in 2 2/3 innings, three Mets relievers combined to retire all 19 Padres they faced.
The eight-runs stood up in an 8-6 win -- the Padres' 50th win of the season. But Schimpf fell short of again making the Padres record book -- his nine home runs in July was the most ever in a calendar month for a Padres rookie, a feat that earned Schimpf the National League Rookie of the Month award.
But Friday's game did add another interesting page to the resume being compiled by the 28-year-old Louisianan, who spent seven seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays' system before finally getting his first Major League shot with the Padres on June 14.
In 47 games with the Padres, Schimpf is hitting only .218. But 24 of his 31 hits have gone for extra bases -- 10 doubles, two triples and 12 home runs. He has also drawn 25 walks in 173 plate appearances.
That gives him a .347 on-base percentage and a .570 slugging percentage for a .917 OPS against that .218 batting average. Schimpf has 29 RBIs and 28 runs scored in those 47 games, making the left-handed-hitting, 5-foot-9, 180-pound infielder a formidable weapon.
Since July 25, Schimpf is hitting only .167 (9-for-54). But he has four doubles, a triple and three home runs for 12 RBIs and nine runs scored. During the slump, he has a .444 slugging percentage and 11 walks for a .308 on-base percentage and a .752 OPS.
As for the Padres' all-time, single-game RBI record ... First baseman Nate Colbert established the mark with eight at Atlanta on Aug. 1, 1972, during a doubleheader in which he hit five homers and drove in 13 runs. He shares the Major League record for homers and RBIs in a doubleheader.

Ken Caminiti tied Colbert's single-game RBI record on Sept. 19, 1995, against Colorado.
The seven Padres with seven RBIs in a game are: Dave Kingman (1977), John Kruk (1987), Jack Clark (1989), Joe Carter (1990), Phil Nevin (2001), Ramon Hernandez (2005) and Brian Giles (2006).
Schimpf joined Matt Kemp as the second Padre to have a six-RBI game this season.

• Right fielder Jabari Blash hit his third homer on Friday night. All three of his Major League homers have come during the past eight games. Since returning to the Padres on July 31 from Triple-A El Paso, Blash is 9-for-35 (.257) with a double, the three home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored in 11 games.
• Right-hander Brandon Maurer has five saves in five tries since succeeding the traded Fernando Rodney as the Padres' closer on July 1. In 13 outings since moving into the closer's role, Maurer has allowed runs (three) in only one outing and that was in a non-save situation.
