MIAMI -- Brewers left-hander Sam Freeman cleared waivers and has accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
"We're happy to keep him," manager Craig Counsell said. "We were hoping to be able to keep him. He's got a good arm. We really want to work with him and get his confidence back and get him throwing strikes. I think if we can get him to that point, he can help us."
Freeman, who was acquired for cash considerations from the Rangers on April 5, appeared in seven games for the Crew this season, all in relief. He had no decisions and compiled a 12.91 ERA over 7 2/3 innings of work. Freeman gave up 13 hits and 11 earned runs, including two homers. He walked nine and struck out eight.
He was designated for assignment on May 3 to make room for right-hander Junior Guerra.
The 28-year-old Freeman has seen better days. From 2013-15 in 111 Major League games with the Cardinals and Rangers, Freeman had a 2.74 ERA.
"He's got a pretty special arm, and he's had success in the big leagues," Counsell said. "So it's a matter of getting him more comfortable and in a good place."
Freeman's previous success did not carry over to his first stint with the Brewers, though. Counsell hopes he can contribute later in the season.
"He struggled throwing strikes for whatever reason," Counsell said. "There wasn't enough strikes to give him a chance to be successful."
