FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sam Travis, ranked No. 7 among Red Sox prospects by MLBPipeline.com, belted a three-run homer to lead his team to a 9-5 victory over the split-squad Orioles on Thursday afternoon at JetBlue Park.
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for Boston (6-10).
The first baseman went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and is hitting .591 this spring. Travis is expected to start the season in the Minor Leagues, but he has risen fast since being drafted out of Indiana University in 2014.
"He doesn't seem to change despite who he might be facing or the setting," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He's a strong hitter. Good bat speed. Demonstrates, obviously, some big power here today. You like the overall aggressiveness and the controlled aggression. You love the attention he pays in the early work prior to games. Exciting young player."
Meanwhile, the Orioles' No. 13 prospect, first baseman Christian Walker, ripped a three-run homer against Boston left-hander Henry Owens in the top of the third. Baltimore's Quincy Latimore added a solo shot in the ninth.
Owens, competing for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, had a tough day for Boston, giving up four hits and four runs over 2 2/3 innings.
"In the third inning, I felt like [there were] some mishaps with my mechanics," Owens said. "I was thinking about it too much on the mound. I had a few conversations in the dugout about what [catcher Ryan] Hanigan saw. I'll work on that tomorrow and continue to work on it."
Travis Shaw went 1-for-3 and scored a run. He is hitting .464 for the Red Sox. Boston's No. 13 prospect, Marco Hernandez, went 2-for-2 with an RBI single. After his run-scoring hit in the seventh inning, he exited the game with a left shoulder subluxation and was replaced by a pinch-runner.
"He's done it before," Farrell said of Hernandez. "The feeling came back when he came into the dugout, as did some of the strength. We'll check him tomorrow to see what might be needed. At this point, we don't think there will be the need for follow-up exams or pictures, but we'll be sure of that tomorrow when he comes in."
Left fielder Nolan Reimold had a hit and scored a run for Baltimore, while Dariel Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Most of the O's regulars were slated to play the night game against the Twins.
Up next for the Red Sox: The Red Sox will play split-squad games at 1:05 p.m. ET on Friday, hosting the Twins at JetBlue Park and playing the Rays in Port Charlotte, Fla. Righty Rick Porcello will pitch at home in a game that will be broadcast on a free exclusive webcast on redsox.com. Lefty Roenis Elias, competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, will start on the road. Mookie Betts, David Ortiz, Xander Bogaerts and Hanley Ramirez will be in the starting nine at home. Pablo Sandoval and Brock Holt will start against the Rays.
Up next for the Orioles: The O's will travel to Tampa, Fla., to play the Yankees in a 6:35 p.m. ET game on Friday, with right-hander Miguel Gonzalez getting the start. The Yankees counter with lefty CC Sabathia. The game will be shown on MLB.TV.
