Basallo aggravates lingering right shoulder discomfort in finale

HOUSTON -- Orioles catcher left Sunday’s 5-2 win over the Astros at Daikin Park with right shoulder discomfort after grimacing during a second-inning at-bat.

Facing Astros right-hander Hunter Brown leading off the second, the left-handed-hitting Basallo hit a grounder to first, then tucked his right arm next to his body, wearing a pained expression as he ran out of the batter’s box.

“It’s been a lingering thing, and obviously, he just aggravated it,” Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said after the game.

Sam Huff, who joined the Orioles’ taxi squad Sunday and had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, replaced Basallo behind the plate.

Albernaz said he wanted to avoid using Adley Rutschman on Sunday, noting the All-Star catcher was experiencing “a little bit of left wrist discomfort.”
