A's place Manaea (shoulder impingement) on DL

August 26th, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS -- The A's have placed starter on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder impingement, the club announced prior to Sunday's game. Manaea has experienced a breakout season in his third year with the A's.
"[Manaea] played catch today and after like five throws needed to shut it down," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said following Sunday's 6-2 win over the Twins. "Just overall didn't feel great. We certainly didn't wanna push it with where we are in the season. So we're gonna send him back. Obviously, he's on the DL right now, and he'll see our doctors tomorrow, and we'll figure out where we go from there."
Melvin said that Manaea had not had an MRI yet.
"You've seen the way he's pitched -- it's basically been the same way," Melvin said. "The velo's dropped a little bit, but he's been able to pitch around it, and there wasn't any pain or soreness or anything, but today, it became an issue."
The 26-year-old lefty is 12-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 27 starts this season, including 108 strikeouts and 32 walks in 160 2/3 innings pitched. He is tied for second in the American League in games started, ninth in innings pitched and is sixth in fewest walks per nine innings (1.79). On April 22, he threw the 12th no-hitter in franchise history.
This is Manaea's first stint on the disabled list this year.
"We don't want to see anybody go down," A's third baseman said. "To have Sean go down, somebody who's been pitching so well for us and somebody we really relied on all season, it's not a very good thing. But I know that he's gonna take care of it and come back strong, which is what we need. I feel like our mindset's pretty good. We've been hit with a lot of adversity, and we've been able to just keep pushing forward and keep finding ways to win."
In a corresponding move, Oakland has recalled RHP . Pagan is 3-0 with a 3.71 ERA in 53 1/3 innings pitched for Oakland this season, including 53 strikeouts and 15 walks.
Earlier on Sunday, the A's had announced that Pagan was headed to Triple-A Nashville to make room for starter , who was recalled for a spot start on Sunday, but Pagan did not make an appearance with Nashville before being recalled.
