February 8th, 2017

SAN DIEGO -- When the World Baseball Classic takes center stage next month, the Padres will be well-represented. And when the scene shifts to Petco Park for the second round, San Diego fans might see a few familiar faces.
Third baseman and right-hander -- both playing for Team Venezuela -- are among seven in the organization who were named to their national teams' rosters on Wednesday evening for the 16-team tournament.

All four countries featuring Padres would play in San Diego if they can advance out of their opening round pools. Venezuela and Mexico are joined by Puerto Rico and Italy in Group D. Canada and the Dominican Republic, meanwhile, will square off with the United States and Colombia in Group C. The top two teams in each pool advance to play in a four-team round robin at Petco Park, beginning March 14.

Among the seven players named, only two are expected to make the Padres' Opening Day roster. Solarte will likely compete with the Marlins' for the starting third-base job on Team Venezuela. Chacin, meanwhile, could slot in as the second or third starter behind .
Rodriguez, Fisher and Castillo have been named to their teams' designated pitcher pools, or DPPs. A team can use up to 10 designated pitchers but can't have more than two on its active roster at a time. Those "active" DPs can be replaced at the beginning of each of the next two rounds, but only by another DP. Once a DP has been replaced, he cannot return to the active roster for a subsequent round.
As it stands, Castillo is the only active DPP of the three.

Fisher and Romak were acquired as Minor League free agents during the offseason. Rodriguez split time between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso last year, while Castillo and Naylor finished the 2016 campaign at Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore.
If Team Canada were to advance to the second round, Naylor would be playing at Petco Park for the third time in less than a year. The 19-year-old slugger took part in the All-Star Futures Game in July and the Padres Futures Game in October. He combined to go 4-for-7 with a homer, a double and four RBIs.
