SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Tigers, backed by some strong pitching, edged the Orioles, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Ed Smith Stadium in one of the final games of the Grapefruit League season.
Tigers starter Shane Greene continued his solid spring, striking out nine over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander has pretty much locked up the club's fifth-starter spot.
"Honestly, I felt a little off the first couple innings," Greene said. "I was leading my arm a little bit. I just had to slow down, and once I did that, everything started to click."
Detroit got on the board with James McCann's opposite-field shot in the second inning off O's starter Chris Tillman. It was McCann's second homer in four days and his fourth of the spring.
Tillman went four innings and allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in his final tuneup before getting the Opening Day nod.
"It was OK. Early on, command was a little off," Tillman said. "As the game went on, it got a little better, so I was happy with the way I finished up."
Jose Iglesias drove in Detroit's other run off O's lefty T.J. McFarland in the sixth.
The Orioles got on the board in the bottom of the ninth, with Paul Janish's single plating Joey Rickard.
Baltimore's Manny Machado was ejected after he was called out on a third strike in the sixth inning and was replaced at third base by Ryan Flaherty.
Orioles up next: The Orioles will face former O's starter Bud Norris in Thursday's Grapefruit League finale at Ed Smith Stadium at 3:05 p.m. ET, available live on Gameday Audio. Baltimore will counter with Yovani Gallardo, who will pitch the second game of the regular season. The O's will finish up their exhibition season with a game in Philadelphia on Friday.
Tigers up next: The Tigers are scheduled to field close to their Opening Day lineup on Thursday, when they host the Yankees in a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup at Joker Marchant Stadium, available live on MLB.TV. Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez are expected to start, as is every Tigers regular except catcher McCann. Lefty-relief candidate Kyle Ryan is tentatively scheduled to start opposite former Tigers prospect Chad Green.
