The Los Angeles Angels may be getting a huge addition to their lineup soon. General manager Billy Eppler announced on Monday afternoon that two-way star will be joining the team on Tuesday in Detroit, where he will be evaluated in hopes of being activated as the designated hitter for the club's 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET series opener against the Tigers.

“Shohei Ohtani will join the team in Detroit tomorrow,” Eppler said in a text. “He will be assessed tomorrow afternoon and we will have an update regarding his availability at that time.”

Ohtani, who underwent Tommy John surgery last October, has yet to appear in a game this season, but he has been rehabbing and began taking batting practice on April 19. Ohtani is not expected to pitch this season, but he remains on target to return to the mound next year, throwing three days a week as part of his rehab.

When he returns as a hitter, Ohtani will wear a brace over his right elbow when he's on the bases. He practiced sliding last week to get a better feel for what it will feel like while wearing the elbow brace.

The 2018 American League Rookie of the Year took the baseball world by storm last season, going 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA on the mound and slashing .285/.361/.564 with 22 home runs and 61 RBIs.
