BALTIMORE -- The Orioles' front office is undergoing some change late in the 2026 season.
Assistant general manager Sig Mejdal is shifting roles, according to a source, as the 60-year-old will no longer be overseeing Baltimore's analytics department. Instead, he will oversee the research of emerging technologies and innovative practices across baseball operations.
The club has not confirmed or announced the change.
Mejdal, who will be retaining the title of assistant GM, had led the O's analytics department since getting hired in November 2018, brought on shortly after the hiring of Mike Elias as GM. Mejdal and Elias both worked in the Astros' front office from 2012-17, and they also overlapped on the Cardinals' staff from 2007-11.
A former NASA engineer, Mejdal helped the Orioles beef up their analytics department under a new regime. That was a driving force of the club's rebuild that began early in Elias' tenure and eventually led to positive results, as the O's made back-to-back postseason appearances in 2023 and '24 (winning 101 games and the American League East title in the former).
However, Baltimore has struggled more in recent years. The Orioles went 75-87 and finished in last place in the AL East in 2025, which featured a mid-May dismissal of manager Brandon Hyde.
In 2026, the O's have underperformed a bit under new manager Craig Albernaz. Entering Friday, they had a 75-78 record that had them three games out of a playoff spot with only nine games remaining.
It is not yet clear who will oversee Baltimore's analytics department moving forward, nor whether more changes could come to the front office.
This wasn't the first change to be made this month, though. The Orioles mutually parted ways with longtime executive Matt Blood earlier in September, according to a source. (The club did not confirm the move, though Blood is no longer listed in the front-office directory.)
Blood had been with the O's since 2019, serving as vice president of player and staff development this year after previously having runs as director of player development (2019-23) and VP of player development and domestic scouting (2023-25).
