GLENDALE, Ariz. -- White Sox center fielder Charlie Tilson felt discomfort in his right foot on Sunday and will be re-evaluated Monday. Tilson, who was wearing a walking boot Sunday, has not played in a Cactus League game due to a stress reaction suffered in his right foot during camp.
It was the sort of original setback Tilson expected as part of the recovery for his surgically repaired torn left hamstring suffered during the lone game he played for the White Sox last season at Comerica Park on Aug. 2 in Detroit. After getting a single in his first career at-bat following his trade from St. Louis, Tilson suffered the injury chasing down a Jose Cabrera fly ball in right-center.

Manager Rick Renteria believed he would have a much better understanding of Tilson's situation Monday.

"Any player, it's a difficult moment to be living for him because he has been working so hard after the injury that he sustained with the hamstring," said Renteria after Texas' 10-8 victory over the White Sox in game one of a day-night doubleheader for the team at Camelback Ranch. "But there are only certain things that he can control, and he's been doing everything up to that point.
"I know he's disappointed. But we'll just have to be kind of patient to see what the evaluation tomorrow is and then try to figure out what approach we're going to take." 
With Tilson looking increasingly likely to start the season on the disabled list, non-roster invite and six-year-veteran Peter Bourjos, and young talent such as Jacob May, 25, and Adam Engel, 25, become candidates for the starting job. Renteria prefers to have young players play regularly if they are up at the big league level, unless their presence is just for a short time.
"It's the same thing that it's been since the beginning of the spring. We've had all these young men with Engel and Jacob and Bourjos," Renteria said. "It's just going to continue to play itself out. At this point, because we don't know when exactly Tilson will be in until we get the evaluation tomorrow, we'll continue to play these guys and see where it ends up developing."
