While Spencer Jones waits for an opportunity to open up in the big leagues, he’s passing the time the only way he knows how: mashing dingers.
Jones, the Yankees’ No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, blasted his first homer of the season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, a 109.1 mph scorcher that traveled a projected 397 feet.
Jones’ trademark power has been on full display through three games this season: five of his seven batted balls have come off the bat at 104.1 mph or faster, including a 113.6 mph single on Sunday that was the third-fastest tracked ball he’s posted at the Triple-A level.
Jones' 2026 exit velocities through three Triple-A games
Hard-hit: 95+ mph
- 113.6 mph single
- 110.0 mph groundout
- 109.1 mph home run
- 105.8 mph double
- 104.1 mph single
- 96.1 mph flyout
- 53.2 mph groundout
The 24-year-old outfielder had a strong spring for the Yankees, hitting .357 with six homers and a 1.526 OPS over 13 games.
But with Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham starting in New York’s outfield and Giancarlo Stanton at DH, there’s no room for Jones to get regular playing time in the Majors. Thus, he was optioned to Triple-A along with fellow youngster Jasson Domínguez, who has gone 4-for-13 with three RBIs for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far.
Of course, Jones might have reached the Majors already if not for the extreme strikeout issues that have dogged him throughout his Minor League career. Those haven’t gone away, either, as he’s gone down on strikes five times in 12 plate appearances.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Jones is one of baseball’s most polarizing prospects, but given the immense raw power he can generate, Yankees fans everywhere are eagerly waiting to see what he can do in the Bronx when his time comes. Until then, expect more of what we've seen so far.
