JUPITER, Fla. -- Tanner Roark tossed three scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut and Trea Turner hit a solo homer, but the Cardinals rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to steal a 5-4 victory over the Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday.
It marked the first of eight Grapefruit League games between the clubs.
The Cardinals jumped on Nationals reliever Braulio Lara in a four-run rally that featured several players who had been summoned from the team's early Minor League camp, which began Sunday.
Luke Voit started the rally with a home run. Nick Martini capped the inning with a go-ahead three-run double to give the Cardinals their first lead.
"It seems like they always do well, but that was incredible today," said bench coach David Bell, who served as the Cardinals' manager in the split-squad game. "They just got off a plane [Sunday]. It would have been nice if they had a couple more days of BP, but it was nice to get in a game like that and contribute. That can go a long way for these kids."
Roark, who will be representing the U.S. in the World Baseball Classic, scattered two hits and struck out four in his first spring start. He threw 26 of his 37 pitches for strikes.

"I feel like I worked real hard this offseason, started to throw a lot earlier, just wanted to get the arm in shape," he said. "That was the biggest key to be ready for the WBC."

Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, making his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in November 2015, allowed one run on four hits in his two-inning start. Derek Norris tagged Lynn with an RBI single in the second to push Washington ahead early.

After the Cardinals answered with Jhonny Peralta's fourth-inning sacrifice fly, Turner took non-roster invitee Jack Flaherty deep to open the fifth.

Flaherty's appearance followed two scoreless innings from Trevor Rosenthal, who is being stretched out this spring.
