JUPITER, Fla. -- tossed three scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut and hit a solo homer, but the Cardinals rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to steal a 5-4 victory over the Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday.
It marked the first of eight Grapefruit League games between the clubs.
The Cardinals jumped on Nationals reliever Braulio Lara in a four-run rally that featured several players who had been summoned from the team's early Minor League camp, which began Sunday.
Luke Voit started the rally with a home run. Nick Martini capped the inning with a go-ahead three-run double to give the Cardinals their first lead.
"It seems like they always do well, but that was incredible today," said bench coach David Bell, who served as the Cardinals' manager in the split-squad game. "They just got off a plane [Sunday]. It would have been nice if they had a couple more days of BP, but it was nice to get in a game like that and contribute. That can go a long way for these kids."
Roark, who will be representing the U.S. in the World Baseball Classic, scattered two hits and struck out four in his first spring start. He threw 26 of his 37 pitches for strikes.
