The Philadelphia Phillies have overtaken the Los Angeles Dodgers as the betting favorites to win the 2025 World Series. It marks the first time since the market was released last October that someone other than the Dodgers is favored to win it all.
The Phillies are +425 to win the World Series via the latest odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook. That gives them an implied probability of 19.05% to win their first championship since 2008 and a third World Series trophy in franchise history.
Philadelphia started with a +1100 price tag when BetMGM released this market on Oct. 30, 2024, trailing only the Dodgers (+400) and New York Yankees (+800) following their matchup in last year’s World Series.
The price on the Phillies to win the World Series remained the same throughout the offseason, but has been improving since the season began. They were +1000 at the start of June before moving to +900 in July, +800 in August and +750 at the start of September.
With the playoffs set to begin on Tuesday, the Phillies are in position to have a bye during the Wild Card Series. As the No. 2 seed, they could face the No. 3 Dodgers in the National League Division Series.
Los Angeles remains Philadelphia’s primary challenger based on the latest World Series odds, trading at +500 to defend its title. The Dodgers have an implied probability of 16.67% to become the first back-to-back champion since the Yankees won three in a row between 1998 and 2000.
Still, the updated World Series market points to a more competitive race compared to recent seasons.
There are six teams listed at +800 or better to win the World Series between the Phillies, Dodgers, Seattle Mariners (+550), Milwaukee Brewers (+750), Yankees (+750) and Toronto Blue Jays (+800).
For comparison, only three teams were listed at 8/1 or better at the start of last postseason. There were four such squads in 2023 and five in '22.
The last time six teams were trading at +800 or better to win the championship at the start of the playoffs was in 2021. That’s when the Atlanta Braves won it all after starting the postseason with odds of +1200 to win the World Series.
Rounding out the rest of this year’s market, the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and New York Mets all remain between 13/1 and 25/1 to win the World Series. The Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros are 35/1 long shots.
