PITTSBURGH -- Starling Marte left the Pirates' 7-0 win over the White Sox on Tuesday night at PNC Park after the first inning due to right side discomfort.
Marte, Pittsburgh's center fielder and No. 3 hitter, doubled and scored during the Pirates' four-run first against White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez. He did not return to play defense in the second inning. Sean Rodriguez entered the game in his place.
It was not immediately clear how Marte sustained the injury. He has been one of the Pirates' best players this season, batting .308/.366/.503 with six home runs, 30 runs and 19 RBIs while ranking among the Major League leaders in Statcast™'s Outs Above Average.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle did not have an update on either Marte or catcher Francisco Cervelli, who exited the game due to right forearm discomfort.
"We'll know more tomorrow, maybe," Hurdle said. The Pirates and White Sox will wrap up their two-game set at 12:35 p.m. ET.
If Marte is sidelined for any extended stretch of time, the Pirates will have a decision on their hands. They have gone this far without a true backup center fielder, trusting super utility men Rodriguez and Adam Frazier to handle that job whenever necessary. Austin Meadows, their top position player prospect, has split time in center field with super utility man Christopher Bostick for Triple-A Indianapolis, but the Pirates are typically hesitant to rush their top Minor Leaguers into action.
Cervelli's injury was a little more obvious. Leading off the third inning against Lopez, Cervelli took a 93.6-mph fastball off the inside of his right forearm, near his elbow. Cervelli ambled around the field in obvious pain but remained in the game and eventually took his base.

Cervelli did not stay in the game to play defense, however, as Elias Diaz took his place behind the plate in the fourth inning. Cervelli's bruised arm felt numb, he said, so the Pirates didn't want him throwing from behind the dish. Cervelli seemed unconcerned about the injury.
"It's fine," Cervelli said.
Cervelli has been a key part of the Pirates' deep lineup this season, crediting good health first and foremost as he has slashed .302/.415/.566 with six homers and 24 RBIs.
