Kolek's complete-game masterpiece helps Royals snap skid with shutout of Seattle

KANSAS CITY – Quality turned into Complete Game Stephen Kolek on Saturday afternoon, with the right-hander going the distance in the Royals’ 5-0 win over the Mariners at Kauffman Stadium, snapping their four-game losing streak.

The Royals needed this win badly, mired in a funk that has seen them win just two games now in their past 12. And Kolek was exactly the guy they needed on the mound Saturday.

Kolek has made nine starts for the Royals since they acquired him last summer at the Trade Deadline, and eight of them have been quality. Saturday topped the list, though, with his efficiency.

Working with a three-run lead the Royals provided in the first inning, Kolek quickly and quietly dominated the Mariners’ lineup. His first walk didn’t come until the seventh inning, and he erased it quickly with a double play. He didn’t strike out a batter until the eighth inning, getting Dominic Canzone to chase a slider with a man on third base. Instead, Kolek did what the Royals have come to love about him: Rely on the defense behind him and get quick outs.

He worked around a jam in the second inning with runners on second and third base, getting out of it with a double play. Kolek threw a wild pitch in the fifth inning, only to see catcher Carter Jensen turn it into an out at third base with Cole Young trying to advance, ending the inning.

Kolek was at 96 pitches when the eighth inning ended, but the Royals' bullpen didn’t stir until Kolek went out for the ninth inning. A 12-pitch ninth inning quelled any thought about opening those bullpen gates, as Kolek retired the side in order for his second career shutout (last doing so on May 10, 2025, against the Rockies when he was with the Padres).

Kolek joined the Rays' Chris Archer (July 14, 2013; July 27, 2013) and the Mariners' Mike Montgomery (June 23, 2015; June 30, 2015) as the only pitchers to debut since 2010 with two shutouts in their first 23 career starts.
