NEW YORK – The Mets have been competitive ever since interim manager Andy Green replaced Carlos Mendoza on June 26, going 23-23 entering Wednesday’s action against the Padres.
Even if the season continues to improve, Green is expected to transition back to the front office as senior vice president of player development. However, owner Steve Cohen said if Green wants to put his hat into the ring as the permanent skipper starting in 2027, the team would consider it.
“I’m going to take him at face value. He told us he wants to go back to the front office,” Cohen said. “We are going to do a managerial search. If it turns out he wants to put his hat into the ring, that would be great.”
When asked recently about his future, Green told MLB.com, “We have [almost] two months of the baseball season left. I want to do some special things here, and that is as far as my vision and field go right now.
“When I came into this role [as manager], I came in with the expectation that I would transition back to my old role. I wouldn’t point in any other direction. So for [almost] two months, I’m locked in on making this as good as possible.”
Cohen declined to discuss if the team has interest in Alex Cora, who was the manager of the Red Sox before he was let go in April. However, Cohen did talk about the type of manager that he wants next year.
“I want a manager that can relate to the players. I want a manager that can motivate players,” he said. “As we know, playing baseball is up and down. You have great moments and go into slumps. So, how do you get the best out of your players? I think that’s pretty important.”
