JUPITER, Fla. -- Tuesday's game between the Cardinals and Nationals was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to lightning and other inclement weather in the area.
Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright was pitching to opposing pitcher Stephen Strasburg with one on and two out when the umpires shooed everyone off the field. The Nationals had just scored the game's first run on a Jose Lobaton sacrifice fly.
The Nationals tallied five singles off Wainwright, who will start the Cardinals' season opener in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Despite the abbreviated start, he threw enough pitches (78) to stay stretched out ahead of that outing. Scott Sizemore went 2-for-2 against him.
Strasburg allowed three hits over three scoreless innings and struck out five. He had been scheduled to start on Monday until the Nationals had that game postponed due to weather.
Up next for the Nationals: The Nationals close out their Grapefruit League schedule on Wednesday against the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Right-hander Max Scherzer will take the mound for Washington. Scherzer, who is expected to be the Opening Day starter against the Braves on April 4, is having a great spring, allowing two earned runs in 13 innings.
Up next for the Cardinals: Michael Wacha will make his final spring start on Wednesday, when the Cardinals meet the Marlins in a 12:05 p.m. CT game at Roger Dean Stadium. The Marlins will serve as the home team in what will be the seventh spring meeting between the pair of Jupiter-based clubs. Jordan Walden, who returned to the mound on Monday after a weeklong layoff, is expected to pitch in the game, as well.
