A pair of Padres top prospects showcased their bright futures on Saturday as Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a pair of homers to back another strong effort on the mound by Logan Allen in Double-A San Antonio's 4-3 loss against Northwest Arkansas.
Tatis, San Diego's No. 1 prospect (No. 4 overall), hit a solo shot in the fourth inning and added another in the eighth to finish 3-for-4 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Missions. Tatis' multi-homer performance was his third of the season and pushed his season total to 14 homers through 77 games. He's also hit safely in six straight games for the Missions, while improving his average from .269 to .285 in that span.
Coming off of a breakout 2017 campaign in which he produced an .877 OPS with 22 homers and 32 steals while reaching Double-A at age 18, Tatis began his season by hitting just .177/.231/.333 with three home runs and zero stolen bases in April. Since the calendar flipped to May, however, the 19-year-old shortstop owns a .333/.414/.592 batting line with 11 home runs and 11 steals.
Allen, the Padres' No. 9 prospect (No. 100), was equally impressive, tossing seven innings of one-run ball in which he permitted four hits and one walk while striking out 10. The 21-year-old southpaw has been excellent of late, allowing just one earned run and 10 hits over his last 25 innings (four starts). Allen has lowered his ERA from 3.62 to 2.66 in that stretch, and he's now fanned 95 batters in 84 2/3 innings after his second double-digit strikeout effort of the season.

The rest of the best performances from top prospects Saturday
• No. 12 overall prospect Royce Lewis (Twins' No. 1) blasted a solo home run before finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in Class A Cedar Rapids' 11-3 win over Burlington. It was Lewis' second straight three-hit game, and he's now recorded multiple hits in six of his past 10 games. Overall, the 2017 No. 1 overall pick is hitting .321/.369/.498 with eight homers, 20 doubles and 19 steals in his first full season. Jordan Balazovic (No. 30) paced the Kernels on the mound by tossing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts. The 19-year-old righty has racked up double-digit strikeouts twice in five outings and has 41 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings, along with a 2.36 ERA, on the season.
• Triple-A Columbus' catching tandem of No. 16 overall prospect Francisco Mejia (Indians' No. 1) and Eric Haase (No. 19) combined for five extra-base hits and eight RBIs in a 10-9 win over Indianapolis. Mejia tallied two doubles and went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in his eighth straight multi-hit game, giving him a robust .455/.476/.717 batting line, with four homers, 14 doubles and 23 RBIs in 24 games this month. Haase, meanwhile, hit a three-run homer in the first inning, a two-run double in the second and a solo shot in the fourth as part of a 3-for-4, career-high six-RBI performance. Yu Chang (No. 7) sealed the victory with a walk-off homer in the ninth, his seventh this season.

• No. 10 overall prospect Forrest Whitley (Astros' No. 2) struggled in the first inning, allowing three runs before recording two outs, but rebounded to retire 11 of the final 13 batters he faced en route to completing four innings. He permitted four hits and one walk and struck out five in the outing, throwing 54 of his 81 pitches for strikes. After three straight scoreless starts to begin his season, the 20-year-old righty has given up 10 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings in his past two turns. Yordan Alvarez (No. 54 overall, Astros' No. 3) had another big game at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with his fifth home run in 11 games since returning from the disabled list. Through 38 games, the 21-year-old outfielder is slashing .320/.373/.614 with 11 homers and 40 RBis.

• No. 54 overall prospect Alex Faedo (Tigers' No. 3) tossed five scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits, walked two and struck out four in his second career start for Double-A Erie. Faedo was sharp in his Erie debut as well, completing six innings of two-run, two-hit ball with seven strikeouts. The 2017 first-rounder was promoted to the Eastern League after posting a 3.10 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 51 strikeouts and 13 walks in 61 innings (12 starts) with Class A Advanced Lakeland.

• Braves No. 11 prospectTouki Toussaint carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning before completing seven scoreless innings, a season high, and matching his career high with 11 strikeouts in Double-A Mississippi's 2-1 loss against Pensacola. He threw a season-high 102 pitches (63 strikes) in the outing, allowing two hits, three walks and one hit-by-pitch. It was the fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season for the 22-year-old right-hander, who ranks first in the Southern League and third in Minor League Baseball with 107 strikeouts. Across 16 starts, Toussaint owns a 2.93 ERA and .208 BAA in 86 innings.

• Cardinals first-round Draft pick Nolan Gorman blasted a pair of two-run home runs, going deep in the first and seventh innings in Rookie-level Johnson City's 12-6 win over Kingsport. The only player on MLB Pipeline's Draft Top 200 with a 60-grade power tool, Gorman, an 18-year-old third baseman, has hit three homers in his first nine games as a pro. He's also hit safely in six straight, highlighted by his first career multi-hit performance on Saturday.
• Cubs No. 18 prospect Keegan Thompson was lights-out in his second Double-A start, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Tennessee's shutout of Chattanooga. The 23-year-old righty issued two walks and struck out seven while throwing 53 of his 93 pitches for strikes. The performance was a stark improvement over Thompson's first Double-A start on June 23, when he allowed eight earned runs on nine hits in three innings.
• After hitting three home runs and plating a career-best seven on Wednesday, D-backs No. 19 prospect Kevin Cron added to his torrid week with a two-homer, six-RBI performance in Triple-A Reno's 14-4 win over Salt Lake. The 10th multi-homer game of Cron's career pushed the 25-year-old corner infielder's season total to 13 home runs through 49 games in the Pacific Coast League. One of the more accomplished sluggers in the Minors, Cron has hit at least 25 homers for three straight seasons, including a career-high 27 bombs in 2015.

• In the longest start of his career, Indians No. 16 prospect Sam Hentges scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run with three strikeouts in eight innings, leading Class A Advanced Lynchburg past Frederick, 8-1. The 21-year-old left-hander is a rising prospect in Cleveland's system, as Saturday's performance gives him a 3.38 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings (15 starts) on the season -- his first fully healthy campaign after losing much of 2016-17 to Tommy John surgery.
• Padres No. 15 prospect Hudson Potts hit two two-run homers in his first two at-bats for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, snapping a 1-for-19 skid with 11 strikeouts in his previous five games. The 19-year-old third baseman has totaled 13 homers and 25 doubles after finishing his 2017 full-season debut with 20 and 23, respectively.
