5 teams most likely to zero in on impact FAs

November 5th, 2018

and Manny Machado aren't the only impact position players on this free-agent market. Three others -- Josh Donaldson, Mike Moustakas and -- are among the most productive players in the sport, and they will have options for the next chapter of their respective careers.
Free agents, position by position
None are as young or as talented as Harper and Machado (both 26), and none are as likely to change the trajectory of a franchise. But a long list of teams -- we'll get to some of them in a minute -- are willing and able to commit the kind of resources it's likely to take to lock up one of them.
So if you're looking for a reason that this Hot Stove will get very hot very quickly, this is where you begin.
Latest rumors
There could be a similar dynamic in the marketplace for starting pitchers. is a solid No. 1 on a lot of team's shopping list, with and close behind -- those three could set the market for the other available starters.
With the annual General Managers Meetings beginning Monday in Carlsbad, Calif., let's look at the five teams who register the highest on our Sense of Urgency meter:

1. Angels
has played three postseason games in eight seasons. Some of this is bad luck, with too many pitching injuries costing the Angels way too many opportunities. Now with Trout 27 years old and two years from free agency, the Halos simply can't waste another season with the best player of his generation not playing October baseball. That means spending on a starting pitcher -- at least one and possibly two. Whether it's Corbin, Keuchel or some combination of others, the Angels will do everything possible to give Trout a better chance to return to the postseason. And if the Indians really are willing to listen on , the Halos should be first in line.

2. Cardinals
The Cardinals have finished behind the Cubs three straight seasons (and missed the playoffs in all three), and that's all anyone needs to know about how they're approaching this offseason. The team's executives acknowledge that they have money to spend and are more than willing to spend to add a face-of-the-franchise-type player. They were prepared to do it with last offseason, but he vetoed a trade and ended up with the Yankees. Harper is a slightly better fit for the Cards than Machado, but St. Louis will make a run at both. Donaldson would be an ideal fit at third, and there's probably a scenario that Donaldson and either Harper or Machado are added. Regardless, the Cardinals are going to make some noise this offseason.

3. Giants
The Giants haven't won a World Series in four whole years, which must seem like an eternity to those poor Bay Area baseball fans. OK, seriously, folks, San Francisco remains in a win-now mode, and with three World Series trophies since 2010 and a beautiful ballpark that's filled almost every night, few franchises have more to offer. The Giants have had their eye on Harper for more than a year, and while his arrival alone won't get them right back in the championship mix, it will give the club a new identity and an offense-changing bat in the middle of the lineup.

4. Phillies
No team is a more motivated buyer than this one. The Phillies did a really good imitation of a postseason team for most of 2018 until a tough finish set the stage for an interesting offseason. Among the wilder speculation is that the Phils will try to sign both Machado and Harper. They may be the front-runners for Machado -- if there is one -- and their offseason work won't stop there. Philadelphia has done a tremendous job acquiring young talent and intends to do whatever is necessary to return to the postseason in 2019.
5. Yankees
Nothing like finishing eight games behind the Red Sox and watching them win another World Series to motivate the Bronx Bombers. Look for Corbin to be atop the Yankees' wish list, and perhaps another starter as well. They've all but said they're not going to make a run at Machado or Harper, but they weren't going to make a run at Stanton last offseason until, well, they did. Any offseason is better with the Yanks active.
