Rangers' list of managerial candidates narrows

Bell, Girardi no longer in running; Wakamatsu among six known finalists

October 21st, 2018

ARLINGTON -- The Reds and Angels both announced their new managers on Sunday, but the Rangers aren't ready to do so just yet.
Industry sources indicated the Rangers aren't rushing to find a new manager. Instead, they're determined to be patient and make sure they make the right decision on who will replace Jeff Banister.
The Rangers' pool of managerial candidates was reduced as the Reds announced the hiring of David Bell as their new manager. An industry source also said Joe Girardi is no longer in the running for the Rangers position and is expected to remain with the MLB Network.
Both were among the eight known candidates to interview for the Rangers job in the past few weeks. The other six are interim manager Don Wakamatsu, farm director Jayce Tingler, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, Phillies third-base coach Dusty Wathan, Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Rays field coordinator Rocco Baldelli.
The Angels hired former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus to replace Mike Scioscia. The Rangers did not interview Ausmus for their opening.
The Rangers have not yet announced what the next step will be toward hiring a new manager. They are scheduled to begin their annual organizational meetings on Monday at their complex in Surprise, Ariz.
In 2014, the Rangers interviewed eight candidates for the position and brought in three finalists for a second round of interviews. Banister was hired over other finalists Kevin Cash and Tim Bogar. The Rangers have not yet announced if there will be a second round of interviews with their current candidates. There is always a possibility the Rangers could interview more candidates.
Banister was the Rangers manager for four years, leading them to division titles in 2015 and 2016. He was let go with 10 games left in this past season.
The Reds have scheduled a press conference for Bell on Monday in Cincinnati, the day before the first game of the World Series. Clubs are discouraged from making any major announcements during the World Series.
The Reds and the Angels are the first two of six teams looking for a manager to fill their openings. The Twins, Orioles and Blue Jays are still conducting their searches along with the Rangers.
Baldelli, Hyde and Espada have been mentioned as candidates for the Angels, Twins and Blue Jays openings as well. The Orioles are also looking for a general manager in addition to a new manager and have yet to identify any managerial candidates.
